Is The Air Inside Your Home Dirtier Than The Air Outside?

How clean is your home? Before you go checking for dust bunnies behind the living room couch or start inspecting the kitchen counters.... think about the cleanliness of your home air instead. That's right - even though most of us assume the air circulating in our houses is clean and safe to breathe, that isn't necessarily true. In fact, the air inside your home may actually be dirtier than the air outside. How is it possible? And what can you do to start breathing cleaner air?

To begin with, it is important to understand how unclean air in the home happens. When you hear the words ‘unclean air,' you most likely think of smog and outdoor pollution. However, pollution isn't just an outside problem. The air circulating in our homes can be anywhere from two to one hundred times more polluted than the air outside. That is a scary statistic! Even more startling is the fact that 87% of homeowners in North America have no idea that their home air may be unclean. That means millions of people across the country are breathing in allergens and dangerous pollutants. Why does this matter? Prolonged exposure to unclean air can cause a number of health issues. They range from headaches, migraines, and allergic reactions to more serious problems like difficulty breathing, respiratory issues, and nausea.

Unclean air can happen. While it is common, that doesn't mean you should ignore the problem. Wondering how it happens? Typically unclean home air occurs thanks of built-up contaminants. Small particles like dust, dirt, mold, dander, and other allergens can become trapped inside of your ductwork or are brought in from outside. Those contaminants can then be pushed out into the air you breathe - putting the cleanliness and the health of your loved ones at risk. So, the question isn't if the air in your home is cleaner than the air outside. (Chances are, it is not!) The real question is how to tell when your home air is unclean - and what you can do about it.

There are a few ways to tell. You may notice that you or someone else in your household has been experiencing fatigue or another health issue related to unclean air. Your home may need to be cleaned more frequently, have an off sort of smell, appear dirty or get dusty far more quickly than it usually would. These are all signs that the air inside your home is unclean. Sometimes these signs will be obvious and other times they may not be noticeable at all. It really depends on who is living in your space as well as the level of indoor air pollution that is present.

How can you deal with this serious issue? In addition to vacuuming and cleaning regularly, opening up your windows and doors on nice days, and putting welcome mats at the front and back doorways, you will also need to schedule regular air duct cleanings. They should be performed every two years or as it becomes necessary for your home. A duct cleaning will completely remove those built-up contaminants - which eliminates the issue of dust and dirt getting into your circulating air. That means improved health and a cleaner home for everyone.

Is your home air dirtier than the air outside? Most likely. This is an issue facing countless homeowners all over the country. To combat the problem, schedule a duct cleaning or duct cleaning inspection with one of our professionals at Canaduct. Cleaner home air is just a phone call away.

"I noticed a difference..." - 5 out of 5 stars

I don't usually write these, but I just had to take a minute to say thank you. I had an appointment with Canaduct last week. Almost immediately after they left my home, I noticed a difference, particularly in my air. It has really improved! I cannot thank you enough for all of the hard work, and of course, the amazing results.
