What to Know Before Hiring a Duct Cleaning Company for Your Office:

In today’s commercial climate now more than ever it is important to have clean, fresh air for the office (and for home) – here are some things to consider when choosing a commercial duct cleaning company for your Concord, Ontario office, warehouse, retail location, school or high rise:

More Than Just Dust Is Down those HVAC Vents

Did you know that roughly 30,000 skin cells are shed every hour per human; circulated around 60x’s per day in the vents? No one wants mold, pollen, other people’s dander, office debris, dust mites, viruses, allergens and other unmentionables lurking in their office vents that could potentially be brought home to our families by breathing it in or on our clothing.

When Was the Last Time Your Office Vents Were Cleaned?

It’s time to ask your health and safety committee when the last time commercial duct cleaning was performed in your office, high rise, school, daycare, medical building, warehouse, home or your commercial property.

Things to Look for in a Legit Concord Duct Cleaning Company:

Credentials – Are they industry Certified? Insured and bonded service staff? IAQ Certified? (Indoor Air Quality Specialists)

Service options – Do they only do ducts and that’s it, or is it one of many components of the company’s service list, such as furnace maintenance, repair, a/c, whole home/office sanitization, IAQ Tests etc.

Longevity – how long have they been in business? They won’t last long if they do shoddy work in the commercial sector. If they are a Canadian owned, local company in business over a few decades, their reputation should speak for itself.

Equipment – they should be coming in with something substantial – a substantial vacuum truck or a large wheeled in unit (for condos or places where parking will not accommodate a large commercial vehicle).

Service Area – Not always – but often if there is a large service area the company will have / need multiple commercial vehicles to service such a large area, thus adding proof to their sustenance as business.

Adding a HEPA filter to your Furnace or HVAC System:

Also request retrofits to add-on to your existing system such as HEPA filtration system, Fresh Air Exchangers and Humidifiers for the health and wellbeing of yourself and your coworkers.

HEPA filtration systemsHEPA filters down to 0.3 microns and is 99.97% effective with a fresh filter, and traps pathogens, bacteria, many viruses (98% according to MIT including flu), mold spores, dust, allergens, smoke and odours and more. Silver infused HEPA filters use silver as a natural antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal agent.

Air Exchangers – According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the most effective way to improve indoor air or remove or at least reduce the sources of pollutants inside the dwelling is to ventilate with clean outdoor air (see air exchangers article). EPA also recommends is using a whole building filtration system where possible (over a portable unit) such as air purifiers and air sanitizers to improve indoor air quality.

Humidity – More than just dry chapped lips and skin, Static shocks can be detrimental in a workspace environment, especially tech sector, aerospace and others. In addition for other health reasons,  Harvard.edu states in their article The Reason Why Flu Strikes in Winter “we can conclude that, at least in regions that have a winter season, the influenza virus survives longer in cold, dry air, so it has a greater chance of infecting another person”.

Properly Maintained HVAC System Can Use Less Energy and Save on Costs:

Using too much energy?  Excess dust and debris can put undue stress on heating and cooling systems. If your furnace or air conditioner is working harder, it’s using more energy. This, of course, increases expenses unnecessarily, and is decreasing the potential life of the heating and AHU’s (air handling units) themselves.

Ensure your heating and cooling systems at your home or business are operating at peak efficiency – we have seen in some cases, replacing an inefficient furnace can save up to 50% on energy bills.

Debris in the Duct Work Are a Potential Fire Hazard:

Potential fire hazard: The average household produces around 40Lbs of dirt, dust, debris, dander, dust mites, mold spores and pet hair etc per year, commercial spaces – significantly more. This excess debris can not only build up on the heat exchanger and is a fire hazard, but also encourages creepy crawly critters such as dust mites, pathogens, molds, and other health and allergen triggers.

For residential properties, rentals, or laundromats: Clothes not drying? Too Much Humidity in the Laundry Room? Could be a blocked dryer vent. Clothes dryers are responsible for approximately 16,000 fires per year. Even if you clean your filter every time (which many renters do not), particles can still build up in the hose which vents to the exterior of the house or dwelling.

Whole Office Sanitization

Disinfect Surfaces – Most Medical sites suggest disinfecting all surfaces with a product effective against viruses. Duct work has surfaces too, and the air in the home regenerates through the duct work approximately 60x’s per day. Benefect is a 100% natural medical grade, Health Canada approved disinfectant that can be used as a treatment using specialized foggers that adhere to surfaces after duct cleaning in the vents, and for the entire workspace as well. This will add extra protection to the air quality in residential or commercial property.
